The Tour of Britain has been a massive
success
for many reasons. It has re-introduced world class road racing to the
cycling calendar, provided a boost to tourism in the regions it has
visited; it has helped to strengthen the London 2012 Olympic bid. Most
importantly from the point of view of club development and young
people,
it has given grass roots cycling development a huge boost, with Go-Ride
activities forming an integral part of the pre-race
activities.
A team of British Cycling’s Regional Coaching and Club Development Officers toured the country, supported by Ribble Valley CRC coach Ivor Armstrong and representatives from the featured clubs. The team delivered a specially adapted Go-Ride skills activity on the finish area of the Tour of Britain course. Each club fielded teams of six riders who rode head-to-head in a team relay.
The race started with Stage One in Manchester with the Go-Ride skills contest that took place about an hour before the race came through the finish at Urbis on Corporation Street. Go-Ride at Manchester involved three North West clubs, Eastlands Velo, based in Manchester, Ribble Valley Juniors from Preston, and Mossley CRT from Bolton. The eventual winners were Ribble Valley who battled through the heats and won the final ride off. Commentary was supplied by David Duffield and Hugh Porter, fresh from commentating at the Olympics.
The race then moved to Yorkshire with Stage
Two from Leeds to Sheffield. The activities took place on the finish
straight on Pinstone Street with Sheffield Stars Cycle Speedway, North
Midlands
Youth Squad, East Bradford CC, Rotherham Racing BMX and Hetton Hawks
competing for top honours. The eventual
victors were Rotherham Racing.
The race then travelled further south to Stage Three between Bakewell and Nottingham. Go-Ride featured heavily at both the start and the finish, with Matlock CC hosting Go-Ride Skills Tests at stage start at the Agricultural Centre, and the Go-Ride team relay taking place at the stage finish on the embankment at Nottingham. Teams from Redditch Road and Path and Welbeck School took part. Redditch Road and Path eventually came out on top.
The race then moved west into Wales with
Stage
Four finishing in Newport. Working in partnership with the Welsh
Cycling
Union, the Go-Ride team-relay featured teams from Brecon Wheelers, Abergavenny RC, Ogmore
Valley
Wheelers, Maindy Flyers, Newport Phoenix and Cwmcarn Parragon. Cwmcarn
Parragon were the eventual winners.
The final stage around Westminster saw
Go-Ride
as one of the preliminary events. Basking under glorious sunshine,
massive
crowds saw junior teams from Hillingdon Slipstreamers, Herne Hill CC,
Team
Darenth, VC Deal, Lee Valley Youth CC, Sutton CC and VC Londres
competing
for the final honours of this year’s tour. A joint team, comprised of
young riders from Team Darenth and VC Deal came away with top honours
in
the capital.
All participating clubs and riders received certificates congratulating them for taking part and each participating child received a goody bag containing posters, postcards and a water bottle, together with a specially produced Go-Ride team T-Shirt.
The high profile of the activities on the
Tour
can only help boost the development of the whole Go-Ride programme.
Cyclists and non-cyclists alike will have seen the development work of
British Cycling in action. The events have been a great opportunity for
clubs on the Go-Ride programme to raise their profile regionally and
nationally. It has also been a great opportunity to gain the
involvement
of clubs who are new to Go-Ride and give them a chance to get
involved.
We’d like to
take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, coaches and clubs
who
made the event possible.
Promoters
are
still being sought for the Disability Circuit Race and the Junior
Women's
Road Race Championships. Details of all the BC 2005 Major Events can be
found in the Calendar Section of the BC Website. This is updated weekly
as
further events are added.

British
Cycling
and DeafSport have teamed up to try to assist DeafSport in it's long
term
commitment to send a cycling team to the 2009 Deaflympics. In order to
get

in
Reading. This weekend will consist of a steady Road Ride on both the
afternoon of the 16th and Morning of the 17th plus a short conference
to
discuss the way forward and an opportunity to mix with fellow cyclists
with a hearing impairment throughout both days. There will also be
opportunity (subject to interest) for an off road ride on the Sunday)
Invitation to attend this weekend is open to any cyclist who is hard of
hearing, partially or profoundly deaf. Any coaches or others wishing to
work with this group are also most welcome. Any person interested in
attending this get together (either for both or just one day) are

Judging by feedback we’ve received from our
Go-Ride clubs, the Go for Gold programme has been a huge
success.
The programme was designed to capitalise on
the media profile of the cycling following our projected success at the
Athens Olympics – and Team GB cyclists certainly delivered. In each
club
involved, special open days were put on featuring mini competition
events,
Skills Tests and Stage One Talent Team Tests.
Here are just a few of the reports from
around
the country.
Cheltenham and County Cycling
Club
Cheltenham and County Cycling Club’s ‘Go
for
Gold’ was held at Pittville Park on Saturday 11 Sep 2004. Steve
Poulton,
the club’s Coaching Coordinator, advertised the event by email to
interested children’s parents, and Cheltenham’s Primary and Secondary
Schools and publicised the event in the Gloucestershire
Echo.
The event attracted new cyclists as well as
regulars to the club and all participants were briefed on safety and
good
conduct. The first period was scheduled for skills training, followed by
3
Activity sessions based on the Go-Ride workbooks.
Then using a 150m grass track circuit, ‘Devil Take
the
Hindmost’ and Endurance tests were carried out, followed by Sprint
tests
and a Mountain Bike race on some nearby inclines.
The Gloucester Echo Reporter and
Photographer
came to cover the event, interviewing both young people and coaches.
The whole afternoon would not have been
possible without a full turnout of club volunteers and club members.
Parents also got involved in helping with the event.
Feedback was very positive, with most
expressing a keen interest to join Cheltenham and County’s Saturday
Club.
Steve Poulton said that Go for Gold had proved “an excellent catalyst”
for
attracting new members.
Ribble Valley CRC Juniors
Ribble Valley CRC Juniors based near
Preston
ran their Go for Gold event on Saturday 4th September and
the
day went really well, attracting 32 participants.
The club hold their events and regular
coaching sessions at the Walton-le-Dale Primary School and have well
developed links with local schools and the local authority and have a
big
team of British Cycling qualified coaches. They hold weekly cycling
sessions for under 16s throughout the year on Saturday mornings from
10am
to noon.
Halesowen A and CC
Halesowen held a 2 day activity on Saturday
4th and Sunday 5th September at the Halesowen
track.
The venue was a great place to replicate some of the Olympic
disciplines.
With over 160 members, Halesowen is one of
the
biggest clubs in the West Midlands and prides itself on the quality of
it’s young persons coaching and activities. Hopefully the Go for Gold
event has helped boost the club’s membership further.
Southend Wheelers
We received great news from Chris Smith of
Southend Wheelers, based near Rayleigh, Essex. Chris said that the club
made the most of the media profile of cycling after the Olympics and
got
some great press both leading up to and following the event. Speaking
of
the event, Chris said “It was a great success, so much so, we wish to
run
another one.” Many clubs have commented that the event has breathed new
life into their young person’s activities.
The club ran Skills Tests and Talent Team
tests at Thorpe Bay School playing fields.
Southend Wheelers was established in 1923
and
have a developed strong links with local authorities and schools to
delivery quality cycling activities for young people. The club runs
regular Saturday sessions between 10:00am and 12:00 noon and cater for
riders from 7 years and up. Rain or shine, all that is required is a
bike
in roadworthy condition, helmet, drink and suitable outdoor
clothing.
VC Jubilee
Shoreham based VC Jubilee held an open day
on
Saturday 4th Sept at Adur Outdoor Activity Centre. The day
was
organised with Brighton Excelsior BECC and started with a ride from
Shoreham to Bramber Castle and included a virtual reality cycling test,
where youngsters could compete against virtual Olympic
champions.
The clubs then ran a skills test on Adur
Recreation Ground. The finale of the day was an Olympic team pursuit
competition with riders racing around an oval course, head to head
against
another team. Everyone who took part received a gold medal, a Go-Ride T
Shirt and some other cycling souvenirs.
VC Jubilee meets every Saturday morning at
Adur Outdoor Activities Centre from 10:00 – 12 noon for mountain bike
rides. Roy Page, Regional Coaching and Club Development Officer for the
South East said, “I felt the day was really successful and it was
encouraging to see so many riders and volunteers participate in VC
Jubilee
and in the activities organised by this youth development
club”.
Bristol Cycling Development
Squad
Young riders from the L-Dub BMX club based
at
the BMX Track in Henacre Road were invited to take part in an evenings
cycling, which included the Go-Ride Skills Test, which tested the young
riders skills in negotiating obstacles on the bike as quickly as
possible.
Riders also took part in British Cycling Talent Team Tests, which is
part
of a National programme to find future Olympic champions; this was of
particular interest to the young riders, as BMX will become an Olympic
Discipline in 2008.
The Bristol Cycling Development Squad was
formed in January 2004 with the aim of developing more cycling
opportunities for the people of Bristol to try cycling. One of the
clubs
main aims is to work closely with schools to develop after-school cycle
clubs as well as training members of staff to deliver cycling
activities. The coaches were very impressed with the riders’ ability as
they cruised around the challenging circuit with ease recording super
fast
times. With the end of the BMX season now upon us, the riders, along
with
anyone else in the Bristol area are being offered the chance to try
many
other cycling disciplines including Mountain Biking, Cyclo Cross, Road
Racing and of course Track Racing.
A big thank you to all the clubs who took
part
and volunteers who gave up their time. Without the help of volunteers,
grass roots coaching and competition such as Go for Gold could not take
place.
