Following the medal success of the GB team
at
the Athens Olympics, British Cycling is running a special series of
Go-Ride activities based at Go-Ride clubs with the aim of attracting
new
riders into our network of Go-Ride clubs, mainly over the weekend of
4th
and 5th September. The activities will be based on the major Olympic
disciplines. This will be
a
great opportunity for clubs to open their doors to the community,
attract
new riders and benefit from the media profile of cycling in the weeks
after the Games. British Cycling Regional Coaching and Club Development
Officers will be working with Go-Ride registered clubs in order to
maximise the opportunity that the Olympics will create to inspire and
encourage young riders. Clubs will receive resources and support from
British Cycling to help make the event a real success and all children
taking part will receive free gifts. For details of where the Go for
Gold
Programme will be running in your area visit OR if your club is
interested
in the Go-Ride programme, please contact British Cycling on 0161 274
2070.
BRITISH CYCLING TO
RUN GO-RIDE ACTIVITIES AT EACH STAGE OF THE FIVE-DAY TOUR OF
BRITAIN.
The Tour of Britain is back and British
Cycling plans to run a programme of Go-Ride activities at each stage.
Children from each region will take part in a specially developed
Go-Ride
activity based on or close to the finish straight. Teams of six riders
will compete head to head and against the clock on a specially modified
course based on the Go-Ride Skills Test. The riders will be testing
their
skills in a team relay, competing for the fastest team time for a clear
run, cheered on by the Tour of Britain crowd. The Go-Ride activities
will
be an exciting opportunity for local children to visit an elite
road-racing event and get a taste British Cycling’s activities, within
the
thrilling environment of a major stage-race finish. A team comprised of British
Cycling Regional Coaching and Club Development Officers and coaches
from
local clubs will run the events, which will take place shortly before
the
Tour of Britain riders arrive at the finish, with the exception of
Westminster, where the activities will take place before the stage
starts.
There will be prizes for the best performances and goody bags for all
the
children taking part. The children involved will be drawn from the
local
network of schools and cycling clubs. Where space permits, British
Cycling
will be offering further opportunities for members of the public to
take
part in Go-Ride activities. The Go-Ride activities are part of a range
of
development and participation activities taking place during the 5 day
stage race and are a great opportunity to showcase Go-Ride and the
growing
network of Go-Ride clubs throughout the country.
Stage 1 – Manchester – Manchester: Go Ride
activities take place at 1pm on the stage finish - Urbis on Corporation
St.
Stage 2 - Leeds – Sheffield: Activities will take place on
Pinstone Street, Sheffield – time to be confirmed
Stage 3 – Bakewell – Nottingham: Go-Ride
activities as a part of the pre race finish events which commence at
1:30pm, Victoria Embankment, Nottingham
Stage 4 – Newport and South East Wales:
Details to be confirmed
Stage 5 – Westminster: 10:15am – Go-Ride kicks off pre stage events on finishing straight on Whitehall
BRITISH
INDIVIDUAL CYCLE SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 53rd British Individual Championships
take
place over the Bank Holiday Weekend, with qualifying rounds at
Southampton, Swindon and Newport to whittle the entry down to 16
finalists, followed by the grand final at the Horspath track near
Oxford
on Bank Holiday Monday. After three successive years when the final has
been staged at the wide and fast tracks at Bury, Wednesfield and Great
Blakenham, the compact Horspath circuit will provide a different
challenge, and should favour the more tactically aware riders ahead of
the
out and out speed merchants. However many of the faster and younger
riders, such as Shaun Woodhouse, Adam Peck and Aaron Lowey, compete
regularly at the track in regional and Premier racing, and will be
familiar with its character.
The defending champion Phil Howells (Hethersett) will be looking
for a third title success, but no-one should underestimate the threat
of
current World Champion Dave Hemsley (Leicester). With a record five British
titles already in the bag, a sixth championship would set a benchmark
which is unlikely to be bettered.
Others looking for that elusive first win include World silver
medallist Lee Aris (Wednesfield) and Southampton's Shaun Woodhouse, who
has finished in the top four for the last three years. The Under 16
Championship will also be decided at the weekend, with semi-finals on
the
Sunday and the final acting as a curtain-raiser to the senior event on
Monday.

There will be 541 participants embarking on British Cycling’s first ever Mass Participation Ride on Bank Holiday Monday 30th August. With the support of Sport England, Sportcity, Lucozade Sport and the Manchester Evening News, the ride offers three Challenges - Endurance over 110kms, Sport over 80kms and Fun over 50kms. The event comes two days before the Tour of Britain uses the same start line in Sportcity for the UCI ranked stage race, which is supported for it's visit to the region by the North West Development Agency. Entries closed with a rush last Sunday, 18% of the starters being BC members, 12% female! The Tour of Sportcity traffic free route for families attracted a much smaller field, and they start off after the Challenge riders have left at 10.15hrs, and at the same time the BC Go-Ride skills test starts, where anyone can turn up and have a go - and challenge family and friends to see who is the most skilful on a bike. Bikes and helmets are provided, and entry is free.
OFF-ROAD ROUND UP
TOMAC NATIONAL FOUR
CROSS
SERIES
The Tomac National 4X Series penultimate
round
has just taken place over a fantastic weekend down in Plymouth. The final round takes place
at
Penshurst near Tunbridge Wells on the 4th and 5th of September. The 4X series will be on
Sunday
and the 24 Seven/Dirty Habit King of Dirt comp will happen early
Saturday
evening. The
Juvenile
category has been dominated by Tom Dowie, but positions 2nd through 4th
are close between Angus Harley, Bernard Kerr and Scott Roberts. Youth category follows a
similar
pattern with the outstanding Brendon Fairclough dominating with Lewis
Lacey and Sam Horsfall battling for 2nd spot. Junior has a 3 way battle for the top spot between
Dan
Yeomans, Dan Hume and Ben Stephenson. Simon Newton has sewn up the top spot in Senior and
so
has Ian Hopkins in Master.
Unless Rachel Atherton puts in an appearance, then Kim Boffey
will
carry off the Female Senior title and Laurie Yeomans should comfortably
take the Female Junior title.
The Elite category has been dominated by 2003 champion Scott
Beaumont, so unless Martin Ogden can pull something special out in
round
6, Scott will once again take the title.
