MANCHESTOUR MASS
PARTICIPATION - A
CHALLENGE
FOR ALL
Entries are flooding in for the Manchestour mass
participation event on Bank Holiday Monday 30th August, despite a delay
in
setting up the online entry facility – we hope to have that sorted in
the
next couple of days. Based at Sportcity, close by the Manchester
Velodrome, the Manchestour offers three different ride options, a
110kms
Endurance ride, an 80kms Sport ride and a 50kms Fun ride. These rides
all
head out east to the Pennines and into the Northern fringes of the Peak
District. There is also the "Tour of Sportcity" ride for families and
youngsters within the Sportcity complex, with a 4kms Traffic free
circuit
that circles Manchester City Football Stadium, the National Squash
Centre
and the Regional Tennis Centre.
Within 4 kms of the start of the ManchesTour,
participants are in the countryside and from then on it’s a challenging
and exciting ride through the Pennines, with the Endurance option
taking
in the legendary climb of Holme Moss on a route with a very undulating
profile. National Escort Group Motorcycle Marshals will monitor
progress
of riders, so help will always be on hand. Entry for the rides can be
made
online – simply visit the britishcycling.org.uk news pages (link is
bottom
left on site homepage). Participants can request Entry forms over the
phone on 0161 274 2010.

25 YEARS OF JIM
HENDRY
British Cycling last week marked 25 years of
service by General Secretary, Jim Hendry with a special presentation.
Jim’s first day of employment was way back on 1st August 1979. Jim has
filled many roles for the organization, including Director of Racing, Director of Coaching
Development
and, briefly in 1997, Chief Executive. At the presentation, which was
attended by staff and board members, Jim was presented with a range of
fishing equipment – Jim is a legendary fisherman – an engraved gold
watch
and a matching glasses and decanter set. Congratulations to Jim on
reaching this landmark.
UCI WORLD TRACK MASTERS
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Just a reminder that entries close for these
Championships to be held in Manchester 13th-18th September on 18th
August.
(Late entries can be accepted but at a higher entry fee). Entry details
are available via paulwest@britishcycling.org.uk or
www.cyclingmasters.com. Entrants are reminded that they must hold a
full
UCI recognised competition licence in order to compete in these
championships.
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP COMES TO
WALES
A round of the season long international UCI
Women’s
World Road Cup, is coming to Wales after a £250,000 bid from a
consortium
of partners including Newport City Council, the Welsh Assembly
Government
and the Welsh Cycling Union was accepted by the Union Cycling
Internationale. A provisional date for the race is August 21st 2005 with
a
start and finish possibly at the Celtic Manor Resort. Nicole Cooke has
vowed to regain the World Cup crown she won 12 months ago and is
excited
by the prospect of a World Cup event so close to home. Cooke said: "I
really appreciate my fan base here in Wales and know that they get very
few opportunities to see me race in front of them. I will do absolutely
everything I can to do Wales proud. It will be a top class world field
with a huge number of riders all wanting to beat me in my own back
yard."
COVERED VELODROME FOR SCOTLAND
The Scottish Executive has announced that in
partnership with City of Edinburgh Council it will be supplying £6M to
assist in the building of a covered velodrome and an indoor football
facility in Edinburgh.
City
of Edinburgh Council will top up the grant with money from the sale of
the
existing facilities at Meadowbank, hopefully will not be before the new
velodrome has been built. Scottish Cycling’s part in the finance will
be
to make sure that the facility is utilised to its full potential at all
times with training and coaching programmes as well as National and
possibly International events for paying spectators. Meadowbank has seen
a
growth in track racing since its inception in the 70’s for the
Commonwealth Games but has always suffered from the Scottish weather
curtailing activities at the track. If the Scottish track follows the
lead
from the new Welsh track at Newport, there will be a tremendous
increase
in the usage of such a facility from multi discipline riders knowing
that
they will always gain access to a dry weatherproof track for coaching
and
training throughout the year.

Record numbers are expected to compete
in
the second national round of cycle speedway's youth and junior league,
which takes place at the Whitton track in Ipswich this Saturday (7th
August).
The competition has gone from strength
to
strength in recent years, and was spearheaded initially by the
successful
youth programmes at clubs such as Exeter, Newport, Hethersett in
Norfolk
and Sandwell in the West Midlands.
More recently the phenomenal growth in youth membership at
Ipswich
has established the Suffolk outfit as the biggest cycle speedway club
in
the country, and with home advantage on Saturday they are assured of a
full turnout in all age categories. More recently, many other clubs have been
successfully
recruiting youngsters, notably through a nationwide "come and try it"
promotion during National Bike Week, and the competition can only
expand
further.
The four regional rounds earlier in
the
season attracted 261 riders from 26 clubs, 11% of them girls. More than 120 riders competed
at
the first National Round at Swindon last month, a figure which is
likely
to be bettered at Ipswich.
The action starts at 12 noon, and with grand prix categories
ranging from under 8s to under 18s, the track floodlights may be
brought
into action before the busy programme is completed.
The start of football's Premier League
may still be a week away, but in cycle speedway Sunday's round of
Premier
League fixtures see the season reach a crucial stage. Table toppers Horspath of
Oxford
travel to Norfolk for what should be a routine two points, but they
will
be accutely aware that this fixture was a banana skin which both Poole
and
Southampton failed to avoid in the early part of the season. Nearest
challengers Leicester face a tricky visit to Poole, while Southampton
should expect an easier passage at Coventry. Both Poole and Southampton have two matches in hand
-
against each other - following rain cancelations, and the two are due
to
meet over two days in early October after all the other matches should
be
completed. Horspath, who
went through last season without dropping a point, but have lost at
Leicester during this campaign, will hope to tie up a second league
title
well before that.
Sunday Premier fixtures (all 2
pm):
Coventry v Southampton (Hearsall
Common,
Coventry)
Norfolk v Horspath (Harford Park,
Norwich)
Poole v Leicester (Baiter Park,
Poole)
Wednesfield v Stoke (Ashmore Park,
Wednesfield)
