Go-Ride has added six more clubs during the
past few months, strengthening British Cycling's successful youth and
club
development programme.
In
the Eastern Region, Chelmer Cycling Club, based in Braintree, Essex
have
been added to the list, whilst in the South and South-West, Chippenham
Wheelers, from Wiltshire and Exeter Mountain Bike Club from Devon are
the
latest recruits.
London's
Twickenham CC have also gained Go-Ride status, whilst the Newcastle
Track
Cycling Association, based near Stoke on Trent and Stockton Wheelers,
in
the North East add to the choice for young riders in the North of the
country. For full details of the Go-Ride programme and to find out more
about activities offered by these clubs, visit the www.go-ride.org.uk website.

WELWYN TRACK REBUILDING
COMPLETED
The rebuilding of
Welwyn
track which involved taking the old track, built in the mid 1950's,
back
to the bare earth has now been completed. The first Welwyn Track League
meeting of the 2004 season, sponsored by Plowman Craven Associates,
will
be on Friday 30th April. The rebuilding programme got under way in
early
January and was completed on schedule on April 19th despite some delays
through bad weather and unexpected drainage problems which came to
light
when the old track was dug out. The cycle track will only be available
this year until 19th July when it will be handed back to the contractor
to
re-surface the 6 lane all-weather running track. In the meantime there
will be a 12 week Track League season on the new track plus a couple of
Open meetings, the first of which is the Welwyn Wheelers Open meeting
which includes a round of the British Cycling Women's Omnium series on
Saturday May 8th.
The all important funding for the combined
cycle and running track project - which will cost £575,000 - came from
Sport England (£342,000), Welwyn Hatfield Council (£300,000) with
Gosling
Sports Park picking up the balance including around £20,000 raised by
Welwyn Wheelers and other local cycling clubs. Track Leagues: Training
sessions will start on Monday 26th April and run every Monday apart
from
Bank Holidays. There is still plenty of room for more entries for the
Open
meeting on May 8th. This includes the British Cycling Womens Omnium.

All cycling events taking place between 12
and
20 June 2004 can be registered as part of Bike Week, the UK's annual
'celebration of cycling', via the website http://www.bikeweek.org.uk. For the first time this
year, you can also register and promote events taking place from 1 May
to
11 June that enable more people to participate in Bike Week, e.g.: free
cycle safety checks and skills training. Bike2Work events and rides can
be
run for the whole of Bike Week or for one day only on Wednesday 16
June.
All registered events will be listed on a searchable database (where
events are not open to all, e.g.: Bike2Work rides for employees, this
will
be clearly indicated) and promoted. Registration is a FREE two-stage
process. First you register as an organiser and get issued with a
password
to access hidden areas of this website. Then you are free to register
your
event/s. Note: If you wish to register more than one event you do not
need
to register again as an organiser. Event Organisers can get a range of
promotional material, once their event is registered, using the Free
Support Materials Order Form (downloadable PDF) from the Bike Week
website
- click on the Bike Week logo at the top of the
page.

Fancy riding the World Cup course? Round 2 of the SXC Series
takes
place this weekend. This
course will also be used for the National Championships in July, so for
details and directions, go to: www.sxc.org.uk
The organisers regret to inform everyone
that
the 3rd and 4th rounds
of
the EPS at Hamsterley has been cancelled due to an order for a road
closure not being obtained.
It's a great shame as entries were looking good. Don't let that put you off
going
to Hamsterley, as it's well worth a visit. Go to:
www.descendhamsterley.co.uk for more
information. The 5th and
6th rounds at Bratton, Minehead will still go ahead as
planned.
It's round 2 of the Tomac series and round
2
of the KOD at Hornton Hill, Banbury. This event is also the last chance for any 4X riders
to
qualify for the Fort William World Cup. Hornton's recently undergone a makeover, so will
provide new challenges for all competitors. Categories available for all skill levels and
entries
are available on the morning of the race. Go to www.nps4x.com for details. Weather’s goin’
to
be lovely apparently!
