Somerset Road Club narrowly missed winning the team competition in Exeter Wheelers CC's 17 mile time trial from Clyst St George. The home team's extra riders gave them the advantage. Leigh Pinchen came 6th in 41mins 41 secs; Mark Kurpyta, 7th and first vet, in 41.56; Greg Venn was over 4 minutes faster than last year in 45.23 and Derek Henson put in a time of 47.14. The winning time was 38.21. The route was hilly with 1,000 feet of climbing including Woodbury common.
Meanwhile, Iain Hounsell rode the Western Time Trials Association's 31.5 mile hilly time trial on Sunday near Malmesbury. He came a creditable 16th out of 48 finishers in a time of 1:18:33. The winner was Steve Marchant in a time of 1:13:06.
Even further afield, Tom Cox Somerset R.C.'s chairman, came a good third in the A3crg, 25 mile, 3 up time trial near Petersfield, with John Williams of Bridgwater and Pete Pickers.
The club's youngest member, Torsten Junker, competed in the National Roller Racing Championship at Cardiff. He came first in the 1km event with a new National Record time of 53.53 seconds, taking 5.3 seconds off the old record. He was 2nd in the shorter 500m event with a time of 25.97 seconds, very close behind the winner who took a new national record of 25.19 secs. The previous week Torsten also won the British Schools Regional Roller Racing Title (under 10) at Cardiff.
