Somerset Road Club/Bicycle Chain members narrowly missed out on the team prize in the South West Divisional Championships 50 mile time trial, run by Exeter Wheelers near Buckfastleigh on Sunday. Leigh Pinchen was the first club rider in 2 hrs 2 mins 23 secs, at an average speed of nearly 25 mph on a hilly course. Martin Pearse clocked 2.07.41 and Mark Kurpyta 2.12.24. The team's combined time of 6hrs 22 min 28 secs was only 23 seconds slower than the winning team.
The event winner was Gary Fouracres (St Austell Wheelers) in 1.52.36.
Derek Henson and Greg Venn rode the Tor 2000 2Up on the 27th July on the revised 14 mile and, as yet, un numbered course from High Ham to Pedwell, Othery, Langport and High Ham. There were 11 teams and they came second in the scratch competition and third overall with a time of 40min 8 secs being beaten by 9 secs. The weather was overcast with a moderate westerly wind. This is their best result of the year, and first time on the podium.
Meanwhile, Tom Cox, SRC's chairman was in action again on Sunday in Wales for the Port Talbot Wheelers' 25 mile time trial, finishing in a good time of 57 min 44 secs.
