Club News
Week ending 8th June 2003
The 70th year of cycle sport for Somerset RC/The Bicycle Chain continued with more time trial success for the third week in a row. On Sunday, the club won the first and second places in the First Chard Wheelers' 25 mile time trial on the A303 from Podimore. It was warm and cloudy with a rising south-west wind but it stayed dry after heavy overnight rain. Greg Sandy (Team Endurasport and SRC) won in a personal best time of 52 mins 10 secs with clubmate Jon Wynn coming second in 53.32. Tim Reeves almost equalled his fine performance of last week, finishing in 11 seconds over the hour.
Also on Sunday morning, club riders rode in the Mid Devon CC's 25 mile time trial at Buckfastleigh on the A38. Mark Kurpyta finished in 1 hr 3 mins whilst Julian Ridgeley finished in 1 hr 7 mins.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday evening, near Port Talbot, Tom Cox and Mark Kurpyta rode in the West Wales Cyclists' League 25 mile time trial. The conditions made the times slow and Tom finished in 58.17 with Mark at 59.45.
On Saturday,
Greta and Torsten Junker rode the British Schools Hard Track Championships.
Torsten came 6th after some close racing amongst the top boys in the u10
class. Greta did well to finish second in the pursuit and third in the sprint
to take the bronze medal overall in the u12 girls event.
They returned to their usual winning ways on Sunday at the British Cycling
Divisional Circuit Championship held at West Point near Exeter. Torsten
won the u10 agegroup by a considerable margin. He also came second in the
u14 race, beaten only by his older sister Greta, who is now the u14 Champion.
