Club Juniors Win Again
The youngest members of
Somerset Road Club continued
their winning ways on Saturday with victory in the Divisional Cyclo-Cross
Championships at Cardiff. 9 year old Torsten Junker won the Under 10 age group,
where over the 4 mile course he lapped all but one of the other 9 riders.
There were 12 competitors in Greta Junker's Under 12 race which was contested
over a 5 mile course. She emulated her brother's success, winning the race
comfortably including beating all the boys and again there was just one rider
who avoided being lapped. For both children, who attend Queens College, this
was a particularly fine result as they had never previously competed in this
discipline. Cyclo-cross
is gruelling racing around an undulating muddy field where stamina is crucial.
In addition, last month they both won their classes in the Divisional Hill
Climb also near Cardiff. In absolutely foul conditions, Greta set a new hill
record (the only record challenged that day), again beating all the boys as
well as the girls.
The following week they were back in Wales again, this time for the National
Hill Climb Championship. Again, in possible even worse weather, Greta dominated
her age group with a convincing win. Unfortunately Torsten got cold warming
up (!) and was disappointed to only finish 5th, behind children he had comprehensively
beaten the previous week.
