Week ending 7th September 2003

Veteran cyclist Pete Sandy (Somerset Road Club/Bicycle Chain) recently won the age related National Criterium Championships held by the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists in Curborough near Litchfield. The race was based on 45 minutes round a circuit plus an extra 5 laps. The course has a tight bend before the finishing straight so position going into the corner is critical. Last year Pete came second to Sid Wilson, on the same course in a close sprint. This year Pete got the upper hand and won an 8 man sprint, beating Sid into second place.

Continuing his recent successes, Jon Wynn (Somerset RC) won the Frome Wheelers 10 mile time trial on the U369 course last Saturday in a time of 22 mins 14 secs, a good time considering the strong winds. Rick Johnston (Somerset RC) came fourth, out of a field 44 riders, in a time of 23.18. Jon's win puts him at the top of the West District's Best All Rounder standings.

On Sunday, 4 Somerset Road Club riders competed in the Mid Devon C.C. 25 mile time trial on the S4/25 course at Buckfastleigh, picking up a prize for the most improved rider. Leigh Pinchen was the first SRC rider in 1 hour and 15 secs with Mark Kurpyta at 1.01.00, Martin Pearse at 1.03.02, and Richard Hill at 1.03.15. Richard won the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup for the fastest rider who had not previously ridden a 25 mile time trial in under 1 hr 4mins.

The Yeovill CC 10 scheduled for 27 September has been cancelled due to roadworks. For more detail see the News section of www.Yeovilcc.com.
