Week ending 1st August 2004
17 years old Dean Robson riding for Somerset Road Club/Bicycle Chain has recently tried his hand at the harder discipline of time trialling against the clock after his first season's success at road racing. In recent weeks, at the mid week Honiton 10 mile event, he has brought his time from a good mid 24 min to a very fast 23 min 07 sec averaging over 25 mph. On Sunday on the rolling hilly S4 course on the A38 at Buckfastleigh he did a tremendous ride and clocked 59 mins 48 secs for his first ever 25 mile time trial event.
At just 17 years to beat the 'coveted under the hour'. To average over 25 mph in your first ride is a remarkable achievement not matched by many other juniors. He rode on his standard road bike plus tri bars but was competing against many more experienced and older riders on special time trial bikes and finished in the fastest top 15 out of over 60 riders, a great achievement for a new junior rider.
Also riding was experienced club chairman Tom Cox. He was also under the hour for the umpteenth time with 59-01 and was full of praise for Dean's exceptional ride.
Somerset Road
Club/Bicycle Chain riders took part in the Gloucester City 25 mile time trial
on Sunday on the U18 course. It was a fairly good morning on the A38 - conditions
were sunny and dry, temperatures hot and rising. The wind was fairly light but
from the NE - the return leg was without doubt easier.
Steve Marchant showed great form to win by some 61 seconds. It was a close battle
for 2nd with Jon Wynn of Somerset RC finishing in 55.32, just 5 seconds ahead
of Rob Wood. Tim Reeves of Somerset RC finished 17th out of 46 riders in 1.00.42.
