Somerset Road
Club members had good results at ILTON on Sunday in the South West Division
Circuit Championships.
Newcomer to cycle racing JOHN PORTER in his first ever race came second for
a silver medal in the 4th cat race missing the gold by just a wheel distance.
A great achievment against more experienced riders. Also in the sprint finish
of 6 riders who had broken away from the main field, was Matin Baxter who finished
4th just yards behind the winner. Mark Kurpyta did well to finish 7th, well
in front of the remaining riders.
Dean Robson continued his first season form & again showing his strength in hauling back the main breakaway riders in the finishing straight. In the sprint he finished a very credible 5th overall but more important, second junior, to win a silver medal against nearly 40 other riders in the 3rds & junior race & beating many accomplished & much more experienced riders. 16 year old Guy Walker had a great first ever race & finished along with Pete Sandy, Carl Ward & Julian Ridgley all just behind the winning sprinting group.
In the final
race of the day the battle of the two main race teams in the area ALCAN and
RITCHEY CYCLE OPS made an interesting tactical race which saw the main group
split into 2 with half the race gone. The battle of continuous attacks from both
teams trying to break each other continued right up to the line. Local rider
coming out on tops by a length was Greg Sandy - Alcan, followed by Richardson
and Bowditch for Ritchey, so honours were pretty even between the teams at the
end result.
