Time Trials

It was also a good weekend for time trialists from Somerset Road Club/The Bicycle Chain. Jon Wynn set a new course record on the U19 course at Thornbury in the Bristol South CC 50 mile time trial. His time of 1 hour 53 minutes and 39 seconds beat the previous course record by a minute but it was short-lived as Nick Gardiner (timetrial.co.uk RT) finished in a time of 1.51.42, knocking a further 2 minutes off the course record!

The excellent weather also made conditions good for the CS Dynamo (Exmouth) 25 mile TT on S4/25 at Buckfastleigh on Sunday. Tim Reeves was the first SRC rider in 57 minutes 28 seconds, with Martin Pearse at 1.00.29 and Richard Brown at 1.04.00. The winner was A Parker (Mid Devon) in 55.10.

Over in Wales, Mark Kurpyta continued his fine season with a new personal best in the Ogmore Valley Wheelers' 25 mile TT, finishing in a time of 56.59. Tom Cox recorded a season's best time of 56.38.

Road Racing

Greg Sandy, Alcan Bianchi, competed in the National Cycling Criterium Championships of Great Britain on Sunday 23rd May.

The event was held at Hillingdon on the outskirts of London and was contested by the 80 top elite riders in the country. The action was fast and fierce right from the gun with Greg being involved in the thick of the action from the very first sprint lap which he duly won. As the race progressed and the continual attacking and high speed racing started to take effect, eleven riders, including Greg forged their way to the decisive break.

Once the 80km event started to enter its final phase, the eleven riders began to split and reform until eventually with less than 5km remaining, Greg made the decisive move of the championships forcing a three man group clear from which the medals and National Title would be decided.

Inside the last 350m, Colin Roshier from London, made the decisive winning move and Greg had to settle for a silver medal this year, with Rob Enslin taking the bronze.
