Ilton Races - Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May 2004

Somerset Road Club/The Bicycle Chain held their annual road races at Ilton airfield on Bank Holiday Monday. There were 3 adults' races as well events for youths:

E, 1, 2 riders

An early breakaway saw Graeme Lackford solo up the road, shortly to be joined by team mate Greg Sandy. They proceeded to ride a 2-up time trial for the rest of the race. The first 2 places were never in doubt, with Greg taking the sprint from Graeme. Veteran Chris Absolom out-sprinted Jules Birks and John Hollier, all 3 a good minutes down on the Alcan/Bianchi duo.

Joe Andrews was a further minute down, followed by Roy Smith at a further 30 seconds.

3rds

Many attacks were brought back to the bunch during the race, which set off at a scorching pace from the outset. With 2 laps (6 miles) to go, Rex Facey started a solo break and maintained it to the finish with a good 30 second margin. The head wind strung out the remaining riders into ones and twos during the last lap as the high speed overall at last took its toll.

4ths

With 30 riders starting, the race went off at a good pace but soon became fragmented as the rising wind took its toll. With a couple of laps to go, a leading group of 7 riders were working well together.

Leading out the sprint, Mark Gibb was first across the line a bike length clear of new junior, Dean Robson. Unfortunately, Mark was disqualified for racing irregularities during the latter part of the race which promoted Dean Robson to his first win in two outings.
