PRIZE PRESENTATION

Please make a note in your diaries. Our Annual Prize Presentation will be held on February 19th at 8pm almost certainly at The Walnut Tree Hotel as last year. This and ticket prices will be confirmed very shortly, just don't book yourself out on this night. Ben Rocket will be our guest speaker and will hand out the prizes on the night. Ben is the LEJOG and back record holder. That's right he rode from Lands End to John O'Groats and then decided it wasn't far enough so rode all the way back to Lands End again! In a ridiculously short time. He is currently training for the RAM (Race Across America). Again more details to follow very shortly so keep your eye on this page.

Could all those who have trophies please return them for engraving as soon as possible. There are a lot to get done! If you are in the Bridgwater area you can drop them into me at Linda Saunders Estate Agents. Alternatively to Pete Sandy or Dan Cox.

MALLORCA TRAINING CAMP

Our annual spring pilgrimage to the island of cycling that is Mallorca is now booked. Some are going for 5 days and others for 7. All are flying out on the 4th March and flights are a reasonable £100 return including bike if you don't take a suitcase. (Top Tip! Share one suitcase and reduce your costs.) The hotel is no more than 20 euros per night half board. The weather tends to be significantly warmer than the UK, unsurprisingly, and the aim is to get a minimum of 300 miles in on the shorter stay (31/2 days of riding). For more information email Steuart on steuart@lindasaundersestateagents.co.uk.

JANUARY CLUB RUN SPECIAL

On Sunday 15th January at 9am the club will be organising a ride from the Bicycle Chain at Taunton. The ride will be the same format as normal, riding together until Bampton. However the ride will be a little easier than the past rides. Leaving Taunton, through Norton Fitzwarren and right through Cotford St Luke(avoiding most of the A358). Turning left on to the A358 to Cedar Falls. Taking the B3224 to the bottom of Elworthy Hill, turning left to Wiveliscombe. At Wiveliscombe head for Langley Marsh, turning right and heading for the top of Elworthy hill, via the most pleasant route(2.5 miles of undulating climb). Back to the B3224 to have a cuppa at Raleighs cross Inn. Then left down to Bampton via the B3224(downhill mostly). Turning left on to the B3227 and a thrash back to Taunton from Bampton in the same way as normal. Its about 40 miles and a pleasant route. If your interested email Dan Cox(daniel.cox4@btinternet.com)

STEVE POTTS

It seems our newest racing member is a bit of a former time trialling hero! He is going to hate me for this article but here goes anyway. After digging around on the internet it seems back in the 80's Steve was with the Stone Wheelers and was a club competition holder for several distances. A cursery glance at their website shows that he still holds the Stone-Buxton-Stone record. He later moved onto the all conquering Manchester Wheelers Trumans Steel Club which as anyone who was around in those days knows was as close an amateur could get to being a professional and they included within their ranks the country's top cyclists who between them won almost everything there was to win. It was as a member of Manchester Wheelers that Steve became a member of the national team record for 100 miles. On top of all that Steve put 500 miles of training in the bank over the Xmas period! Watch this space as they say!

CYCLO CROSS UPDATE

Father and son duo Andy & Dan Wellings were in action recently in the final round of the SW CX league in Plymouth. With consistancy seemingly the key Andy (Dad) finished 8th overall in the Veteran category with Dan (son) securing a fine 2nd place in the Junior category. Several other SRC riders made sparodic appearances throughout the season but not regularly enough to mount a serious challenge in the the overall. Feedback from the novice participants was that CX was the best kept secret in cycling and that they would be back next season. Undoubtably the mild autumn/winter added to the 'pleasure' and I am reliably informed that it can be much harder when the weather turns. Once again congratulations to Andy & Dan on their fine achievements. Here's to next year!

2012 CLUB SUBS

Sorry fellow members but club membership fees are now due for 2012 season. Payment can be made in a variety of ways. A cheque could be sent to Treasurer Dan Cox. You could give him the cash and as he's a police officer can probably be trusted not to run off with it. Finally you could pay direct into the bank account but absolutely must put the payment refernce as YOUR NAME/SUBS. E.g. John Smith/Subs. Thanks.

SRC News 5th December

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! PLEASE READ

The decision has been taken for the club to disassociate itself from the long standing Saturday club run to the cafe at Burnham on Sea. The route has simply become too busy, with many sets of traffic lights, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings. It is felt that it is only a matter of time before there is a serious incident. For the time being the Wednesday ride to Burnham seafront will continue on the basis that only a few riders show up now and many of them make their own way there.

THE NEW ROUTE

This leaves Creach Castle as usual at 08.30am goes through Bathpool but turns right before the dual carriageway towards Creech St Micheal/Ruishton turning left at the roundabout and up through Creech Heathfield and then to Walford Cross. This avoids the tricky business of trying to turn right on the dual carriageway towards Othery at Walford Cross. We then head to Othery and onto The Kellways Cafe, Langport arriving between 09.30 and 09.45am. Riders from Bridgwater and Burnham areas can either organise a route from that end of the region or ride down to Creach Castle or Walford Cross to meet up with the Taunton contingent. Any riders wishing to continue to ride up the A38 to Burnham do so at their own risk and not under the auspicies of Somerset Road Club.

AGM! Sunday 4th December 7.30pm Venue THE WALNUT TREE INN, NORTH PETHERTON.

This is your chance to help decide the future direction of your club.Over recent years the current committee have overseen some significant changes at a time when cycling has become very popular. New committee members bring with them a fresh wave of energy/enthusiasm and ideas which are vital if an organisation is to continue to develop and adapt. Recent developments include: -

  • New Club Sponsors
  • Redesign of the club kit
  • Organising of more race events
  • New website
  • Time Trial Handicap Series
  • BAR Competition
  • Makeover of the Annual Awards Presentation

So how much time will you need to commit? To be honest much of what we do is done via email and phone which reduces the need to get together too often but we probably average 3 or 4 committee meetings per year at most. Any extra workload depends on the role/responsibility but as we are all busy people we do as little or as much as we want individually. The AGM starts at 7.30pm please come along and support your club.

SRC News 14th November

SPINNING CLASSES!

The club has booked TEN spinning sessions starting Wednesday 30th November. The sessions last 1 hour and start at 8pm. Under no circumstances are SRC members permitted to use any other facilities especially the gym for insurances purposes. The cost of the sessions is £5.00 so all 10 sessions will cost you £50.00. Payment will be required in advance on a first come first served basis. Greg Sandy will be running the sessions but all queries must be directed through the club. The venue is Esporta in Taunton. There are 18 places available. Takers so far are: -

More Bad News!

Last Saturday several riders were involved in a crash on the weekly clubrun whilst approaching the roundabout on the northern side of Bridgwater. Jayne Steer came off worst falling face first into the tarmac. An ambulance was called but Jayne was later released from hospital with nothing broken - fortunately, although her face is obviously a bit of a mess. John Wynn with no escape route went over the handlebars and sustained multiple cuts and bruises. When I spoke with him mid week he was still in some pain. We wish you both a speedy recovery. Thanks to Greg Venn for sorting out Jaynes bike following the accident.

SRC News 20th October

The 'RITCHEY Oktoberfest' 8 hour mountainbike event was a draw for several SRC members.

Held on a newly refurbished and dedicated MTB trail around Ashton Court, Bristol there were numerous categories for the many hundred mtbr's who attended from all around the country. Experieced Dave Poole teamed up with a colleague from work to compete in the 8hr 'Old Git pairs' category where the average age of the team had to be at least 40. They managed a full 15 laps within the alloted 8 hours finishing an excellent 6th in their category in a time of 7h 37m.50s Also taking part in the same category were the team of top 'off roader' Mike Waterjohns and Mark Deakin. They managed 14 laps to finish in 12th place with a time of 7h.32m.44s. Novices and event first-timers Tim Reeves & Mike Fisher managed just one lap less, completing 13 laps within 8 hours to finish 17th with a time of 7h 53m 50s.

Everyone enjoyed the experience and despite the sustained effort, most (!) were looking forward to competing next year.

Four club members recently returned from a 4 day break in Mallorca. Darren Avery, Tim Reeves, Nigel Salter and Steuart Saunders squeezed in 300 miles in swealtering 28 degree conditions in four days. Steuart also took part in the European Masters Road Race. The race was run off at an incredibably fast 43kph about 26mph in old money. Steuart finished in the main bunch who were sprinting for 13 place. I was quite pleased considering we'd had to ride 87 miles the day before just to sign on! Steuart said. On the other days they took in various local climbs as you do when you cycle in Mallorca. Pictures HERE: https://picasaweb.google.com/102917254778773808473/Mallorca2011#

Mallorca 2011

SRC News 25th September

This weekend saw most of the club's racers in action in what will probably be the last races of the season for most.

On Saturday the time trialists competed in the Yeovil CC 10 on the A303. Greg Sandy was third with 20.52 with Andy Winterbottom 21.21 and Steve Potts 22.32 combining to take the team prize. Steuart Saunders still suffering a cold managed a 23.35. Unfortunately Darren Avery despite being in the form of his life puctured at the start for the second week in a row!

The CX'ers saw action in the Floodlight race down in Plymouth. I'll post the results when someone sends me a report

On Sunday several riders took part in the final circuit race of the season at Ilton. Although the rain did its best to dappen proceedings there was a good turn out. Full results to follow.

SRC News 22nd September

Junior Dan Wellings scored a great second place at round 2 of the South West CX League at Ashburton on Sunday. Dan split the Mid Devon duo of the promoting club in some what heavy conditions following a night of heavy rain. Full results can be found on the SW CX League website.

Unfortunately Darren Avery didn't have as much luck on Sunday. After travelling down to the A303 towards London to ride his last 25 mile TT Darren punctured just a few seconds from the start! At least it wasn't at the turn Darren.

SRC News 11th September

There was a fantastic turn out for round 1 of the SW CX League run by SRC in Wellington on Sunday. Over 70 riders turned up for the main event with at least 8 SRC riders! Mike Waterjohn was best of the SRC team with Steve Chattell, Dan Wellings and Steuart Saunders making their debuts! Full results when they become available. In the meantime a massive thank you to Mark Deakin and his merry band of helpers for what was agreat event. Music, burger van and a great atmosphere. This is a real growth area of the sport as it is safe (not on roads with traffic) and therefore particularly good for children. The nature of the courses makes for great spectating, so if you haven't been to one we recommend you do so sometime soon!

SRC News 11th September

With the Tour of Britain visiting the area on Thursday and Friday next week there are a couple of ries planned if you want to join in.Thursday 15th 10am leaving from Wellington Motors, Chelston, Wellington(junction 26 M5) to Exmouth, via Willand , Cullompton and Exeter (flatish route) for the sprint finish. 32 miles each way Friday 16th 10.20am leaving from outside Lloyds bank, North street, Taunton(after riders have left). Then across the levels, Othery, Glastonbury, Cheddar Gorge to watch the climb, then to Wells for the sprint finish. Good pace to get to Cheddar in good time. 35 miles ish each way All weather permitting, riders need to be at a reasonable level to get the best from the ride.

SRC News 11th September

Andy Winterbottom saw action in Wales riding a 25 mile TT. Andy posted his fastest ride of the year in less than favourable conditions with a 54.02. Andy was held up at a roundabout and would have scraped a long 53 otherwise. Steve Potts produced a creditable 58.24 to improve his average speed on the BAR. This followed a 23.18 in the WTTA 10 the day before!

SRC News 6th September

Our mounain bikers were in action last weekend as well! It was the Race Face Circus of Dirt series finale which incorporated the South West Championships. Showing no signs of slowing down following becoming a father for the first time recently Mike Waterjohn finished in 5th place in the Masters class. Mike's time was 1h 58m for the four laps which included 1230m of climbing! Other SRC competitors were Dave Poole and Pete Robinson. With CX starting next week things look good for Mike. As he puts it he must have been getting too much sleep before becoming a father as it doesn't seem to have slowed him down!

MJ

SRC News 5th September

The latest BAR standings can be viewed on the link at the top of this page. Competition is hotting up with several riders completing the required number of events and average speeds are very close! The next few races will be critical. Will Greg ride a second 25? Will Darren go quicker than his 1h 11m National Championship ride? (Almost certainly). What has Steve Potts got left and will Mick Daniels manage to squeeze in a couple of faster rides this late in the season? Watch this space!

SRC News 4th September

Most of SRC's 'testers' saw action at the weekend. A team of three went to Wales and took part in a 25 mile time trial. Fastest with a PB by over two minutes was Darren Avery with a splendid 54.12 even though the wind was increasing throughout the event. Andy Wellings produced a PB with 1h 0m 18s and Steuart Saunders failed to reproduce recent form by doing a 58.21 ride.

Other members were in action on the S4/25 in Devon. Mick Daniels just failed to go under the hour in his first ever 25 with a 1h 0m 43s ride! The event was won by Greg Sandy with a 53.30! Steve Potts went under the hour with a fine 59.21 ride.

SRC News 1st September

He saved his best time for the last round of the evening series and it was enough to propel him into top spot in the handicap series with an average speed of just over 31mph. Mick Daniels is the series winner with no rounds left! Well done Mick. Second place in the series was taken by Andy Gardiner with an average of 30.9mph. Andy missed out on the last two weeks rounds which proved to be the fastest of the season. Third place was taken by last seasons winner Jack Plummer who just pipped newcomer Carl Guppy. I'm looking forward to next season already, bring it on!

SRC News 31st August

Tonight saw the last round of the evening time trial series. There was a bit of a head wind on the return leg that seemed to catch some riders out. Some did personal bests whilst others went slower than the previous week. Perhaps the most notable performance was from the ever improving Mick Daniels who in his sixth ever time trial posted a 22.36! This could be good enough to see him leepfrog from 4th in the series to series leader. Final positions will be confirmed shortly. Andy Wellings posted his fasted time of the season with a 24.08. Steve Potts posted his PB with an incredible 22.07. The handicap series has been a bit of a hit this season as it gives everyone a focus and an opportunity to track their progress.

SRC News 25th August

28 riders turned up for the SRC Club 10 mile championship on Wednesday night. On a fast night many riders achieved personal best times. Mick Daniels did a 23.14, Darren Avery a 21.58 and Steuart Saunders 22.33. The Gold Medal went to Andy Winterbottom, silver to Dean Robson both riders making a rare appearance in the series. Bronze went to Junior rider Jack Plummer. Full results can be found on the Weston Wheelers Website. There will be an extra round of the series next Wednesday but it will start a little earlier at 6.45. The handicap series has been updated with things getting very tight at the top!

SRC News 21st August

IT IS THE CLUBS 10 MILE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS WEDNESDAY. Start is 7am at Cross and is incorporated into our weekly time trial series.

SRC News 21st August

SRC managed to put two teams out for the MDCC Hilly 25 on Dartmoor on Sunday. Unfortunately the A team of Andy Winterbottom, Jack Plummer and Darren Avery failed to finish when Jack punctured on lap one. The B team comprised of Mick Daniels, Andy Wellings, Steuart Saunders and Tim Reeves who was persuaded to come out of retirement for the event. The team finished in about 1h 10m despite the rain, fog and slippery conditions.

SRC News 16th August

SRC's Steuart Saunders produced a PB ride by over 2 minutes in the Merthyr CC 25 over the bridge in Wales on Sunday. "I was a bit worried as knowing it is a fast course you want to ride well and this was my 4th race in 5 days!" Steuart did a 56:26 beating his PB from last year by 2m 12s. Multiple national champion Julia Shaw won the event with a championship record ride of 50:01.

SRC News 7th August

SRC's Darren Avery (below) has continued his rich vein of form by following up his recent 22:14 with a 22:12 on the U21/10 course on Wednesday evening. Well done Darren. Congratulations also go to Mike Waterjohns who also produced a PB on Wednesday with a 22:37! Steuart Saunders produced a 23:27 still some way short of last seasons times. There are three evenings left for those of you who fancy having a go at time trialling. They start at 7pm and we meet at the carpark on the hill overlooking the A38. On Thursday evening Mick Daniels, Andy Wellings and Steuart travelled to Castle Combe for a circuit Race. All three rode strongly finishing just outside the points.

SRC News 28th July

One of our two annual trips to Mallorca is fast approaching! The October get away is a little more of an end of season bash/celebration unlike the March version which is all about cramming in the miles for the forthcoming season. The October trip is centered around the European Masters Championship which are a series of races held around the island. If you want to know what its like to be a continental pro then this is possibly your best chance. Closed roads, motorcycle outriders the lot. Many of the competitors are ex-pros of the highest order. For example Malcolm Elliott has participated as has Gert Jan Ternisse former polka dot jersey wearer in the Tour de France. Full details of the race can be found HERE. However it isn't all about the racing. Once those that choose to race have got it out the way there are daily rides to various mountains followed by a lazy afternoon by the pool or on the sea front knocking back a few cerbezas! Many of us will be flying out on the Saturday (8th) and returning on Thursday (13th). Some may add a day or two either end. Some take their long suffering wives/partners. The main race is on the Monday. Tim tells me that return flights are currently £100 without a bike. You can hire a decent bike out there which is possibly the way to go if you're not racing. It can all be sorted before you get there. Generally we stay at the Manaus Hotel in Aranel. For further information on what to do if you want to come along contact either Tim Reeves or Steuart Saunders. Please note this is not just for racers everyone will enjoy the break.

SRC News 23rd July

Volunteers are urgently required for the clubs proposed road race on the Long Sutton circuit on the 4th September. We require at least 10 marshalls around the course for the duration of the race. If we are unable to get enough volunteers we will have to cancel the race. We have secured some sponsorship for the event from Notaro Windows so the event would be branded the Notaro Windows Road Race and could become an annual event. We need to advise British Cycling within the next few days and so far there are just three of us who have volunteered. Please email me by Wednesday 27th on steuart@lindasaundersestateagents.co.uk if you can help out.

SRC News 23rd July

Dan Cox won the Ilton Circuit Race series on Thursday night finishing 3rd on the night, one place ahead of Steuart Saunders. The race was run off at quite a pace with the 3rd cats looking like they may catch the Elites at one point. SRC riders chased down the breaks all night to ensure that Dan finished no worse than 5th to secure the series win.

SRC News 23rd July

Greg Sandy finished 12th in the recent Chard Wheelers RR based on the Long Sutton course.

SRC News 11th July

Sarah Dunn broke the hour on Sunday on the super fast welsh course producing a time of 59m 28s. Well done Sarah.

SRC News 11th July

Two out of four SRC riders finished the Bentor RR on Dartmoor on Sunday. The race was run off at a fast pace from the off with riders being shelled out on the prime hill on each lap. The attrition continued throughout the race with only about half the 51 riders finishing. Mick Daniels riding his first 'proper' road race finished with Steuart Saunders just off the back of the bunch.

SRC News 9th July

On a Blustery evening at Ilton SRC only had one representative in the 4th Cat race. After a negative first half of the race things got a bit livelier when 2 riders one from Exeter Wheelers and one from Somer Valley made a break immediately after the intermediate sprint. The 2 breakaway riders worked hard and managed to get a gap of 30 seconds plus at the front. At the start of the last lap Mick Daniels of SRC broke away from the bunch in pursuit of the breakaway, unfortunately he left it just a little late and finished about 25metres behind the 2 to claim a comfortable 3rd place. Mick has now gained enough points to move into the 3rd Cat. Well Done Mick. The 3rd category race unfortunately continued where the last round left off with virtually nobody willing to race and content to potter around at 20mph! SRC riders, Steuart Saunders in particular tried to animate things by constantly attacking off the front but with just 3 or 4 riders prepared to help out the bunch simply closed down any attempted breaks. It seems with many 4th category riders having graduated to the 3rd category ranks they haven't yet gained enough confidence to race at the front. The race predictably ended in a bunch sprint.

SRC News 29th June

SRC's Evening TT Handicap Series is begining to take shape now with most riders registering rides. Unfortunately as a consequence of the rather windy summer this year most times are behind those of last season nevertheless Junior Jack Plummer has managed to improve by at least a minute on last season's times and heads the table for the second year! Newcomers are fighting it out with Carl Guppy and Mick Danials making an impact. A full list of results can be found on the Weston Wheelers website and the Handicapp League Table on the link at the top of tbis page.

SRC News 28th June

Junior prodigy Jack Plummer rode the 'Tour of Mining Valleys' in Aberystwyth recently along with other south west riders Pete Vincent (Mid Devon CC) and Ashley Martin reputed to be one of the toughest of the welsh races. Jack finished in 12th place in a small group just 4 secs behind the winner James Dobbin.

SRC News 20th June

SRC's Andy Wellings, Dave Coward and Steuart Saunders took part in the Lloyd Coward Memorial RR in Wool, Dorset on Sunday. In blustery conditions the the bunch failed to break up until a mile from the finish when a crash did what the wind and riders couldn't. With many riders being caught out Dave just managed to regain the bunch before the finish line however Steuart was less fortunate. Although he avoided the crash in front of him a group ploughed into him from behind. Steuart remounted and almost caught the main group with the help of other riders held up. He was later to discover the rear impact had cracked his carbon frame, so a rather expensive weekend!

Luke Rowe

SRC News 8th June

Couple of SRC riders did the National 25 tt on Sunday. It was a brutal course not for the fainthearted. Darren Avery's time was 1:11:00 and 113 placed. Something like the first 43 went under the hour out of 122, apparently, according to tt forum it was the slowest winning championships in 24 years.Jack Plummer rode the Juniors and did a great time of 1:01:30 placing him 12th overall. It was a very well organised event and great atmosphere. Found this link from Time Trials homepage to a short video on youtube filmed of the day. Film gives good indication off course terrain and speed of the testers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smn4xarCwOM&feature=player_embedded

SRC News 5th June

Somerset Road Club held their final Open 10 mile time trial on the A38 Cross - East Brent course and amongst the 55 riders on the start sheet were no less than current Olympic gold medallist and former world champion Rebecca Romero and Luke Rowe, thought to be signing for the Sky pro-cycling team in 2012. In blustery conditions both riders failed to disappoint and having deciding to ride the event 'twice' as part of their training programme, Luke comfortably won the event with a time of 19.21 ,smashing the course record in the process. Indeed his second 'none qualifying' ride was equally impressive again averaging a speed at over 30 mph, he returned with a 19.45 ! Track specialist Rebecca took the ladies award with a time of 21.47.Showing incredible consistency her second ride was 21.46. Jon Wynn (Northover VT) came second overall with 20.23 whilst Robin Coomber (Chippenham & Dist) tied with Somerset RC rider Greg Sandy for third place with a 21.00 Andy Winterbottom recorded a fine 21.31 to take the vet on standard prize. Somerset RC were just pipped by Nothover VT for the team prize. Full result sheet can be downloaded HERE.

SRC had 3 riders representing them for the 4th category race at Ilton. In windy conditions SRC were attacking from the start, Mick Daniels attempted an early solo break at the completion of the first lap but was soon reeled in by a group of 4 who immediately launched another breakaway, Dave Poole from SRC went with the break but unfortunately due to a mechanical had to drop back. This left a 3 man break that stayed out until the end. The bunch had split into 2 groups by the end with SRC Alan Wakley and Mick Daniels managing to finish in 5th and 6th respectively. Greg Sandy won the Elite race demonstrating a welcome return to form for the former pro.

SRC News 6th May

If ever proof was needed that demonstrates the benefit of a good winter training base you need look no further than Geoff Hicks, who has entered the 'big league' in the Wednesday night Handicap Series. Geoff has knocked over a minute off his time from last year with a best so far of 23.23. Last years Handicap Series winner Jack Plummer has continued to improve knocking out a series of long 21s making him one of the fastest riders in the region with plenty more to come! Jack leads the competition again! For those not aquainted with the format it is quite simple. Each rider has a handicap which is deducted from their actual times. Thier handicap is based on their best performance the previous year. If they don't have a qualifying time we take the average of their first three rides this season. That is why some riders on the table don't have a speed/time allocated to them - yet. There is a results link at the top of the page or there will be when I get it updated. Oh and there are prizes for the first three.

SRC News 6th May

Volunteers are needed for the final Open Time Trial run by the club on June 4th at 1900hrs. It would be nice if some new faces volunteered rather than the same old ones. Not that there is anything wrong with the old faces mind you! Remember without volunteers we would be unable to organise any of the 5 events so far this year .

We have just learned that club founder Vic Dight has passed away at the age of 94. The brotherhood of cycling is proud of its long history and ours is longer than many. Each generation carries forward their club's history and acheivements to pass onto the next often by word of mouth. For those who find this stuff of interest your best bet is to have a chat with Pete Sandy who is generally more than happy to regale you with stories of the past! Looks quite small size. A pair of wheels. I can be contacted on steuart@lindasaundersestateagents.co.uk

Jack Plummer followed up his fine start to the season with two more placings in the Springtime Puruits thus claiming SECOND overall. Is this the best an SRC member has achieved in this event? Well done Jack! He then followed this up with a 1h 0m 45s 25 mile TT on the U17 finishing 7th. Unfortunately Jessica Steer suffered some misfortune when an irate motorist purposely clipped her during the last round of the STP causing her to fall off. I believe the police are now taking an interest. Next big event is the SRC Circuit Race at Ilton on Saturday 12th. PLEASE NOTE: RACE TIMES ARE AS FOLLOWS. YOUTHS FROM 11AM. LADIES AND FOUTH CATS. FROM 12:15 AND FINALLY ELITE/1/2/3 PLUS 3RD CATS AT 1:15PM. THERE IS AN ERROR ON BC WEBSITE!!!!!

SRC News 6th February

Right then boys and girls the new season is almost upon us. As a major club in the region it is only right that we do our share of race organising and help to put something back into the sport. This season the club is running THREE open time trials, two circuit races at Ilton and wait for it a 3rd & 4th Cat Road Race at Long Sutton in August.

We can only run these races with help from volunteers on the day. We have therefore decided to offer a couple of options to encourage a little more help on the day. Firstly as an SRC member if you give up a chance to race to marshall instead the club will pay the entry fee for your next race. Alternatively if you don't want to miss a race you can bring a long a volunteer to stand in your on behalf. It may well be we have enough volunteers to run the events without the need for either of the above, but please give some thought to helping out, you may find it rewarding!

The first events are both in March. On March 5th Tim Reeves is organsing the first Open 10 Mile Event on the U21 course. Fortunately this event isn't very labour intensive in terms of numbers, but we will require the following: -
  • One/Two Pusher offs (one of these can double up to phone in the results from the finish line)
  • One Marshall at Cross (Start)
  • Two or Three Marshalls at the turn
  • Two or Three helpers at HQ for tea and coffee duties

Please can you email Tim Reeves and let him know if you are available to help on the day. The race starts at 2pm. Tim can be contacted at tnr@live.co.uk.

The circuit race at Ilton requires a few more personel and this race is on the 12th March. We will need at least six volunteers as some jobs can be doubled up. Please contact Steuart at steuart@lindasaundersestateagents.co.uk if you wish to help or you are able to bring along someone to stand in your place if you intend to race.

WOW! What a great night. And that's not just my opinion but the view of everyone I spoke to last night. The Hutch was great and funny in equal measure. For all those who helped make the night run smoothly thanks for your assistance. Those of you who missed out this time there is always next year. We counted 62 attendees on the night which helped create a great atmosphere, I hope you all enjoyed it. Charles Whitton took some cracking photos so take a look HERE

Tim Reeves & Sarah Dunn took part in the 'SPAM' Salisbury Plain Winter Challenge on Jan 2nd. The event was welll supported with over 1000 riders taking part in a variety of distances. Starting at Erlestoke both riders faced the longest and most challenging 50kms route around Salisbury Plain taking in a mix of very 'claggy' strength sapping hills and trails and very fast tarmac road sections taking the riders through several military ranges which are normally 'off-limits'. Indeed, the riders were warned not to venture off course beforehand due to the possibility of unexploded shells ! Both riders paced themselves well, enjoyed the scenery and joined forces to finish in a time of 3hrs 7 minutes.

THE AUTUMN CLUB RUN

The club are organising a club run for SRC members to get together, regardless of ability or experience. We hope to get as many of the 105 members together on one ride, as members are most often in different groups and taking part in a variety of cycle events. The ride will start at The Bicycle Chain at Taunton, at 9am on Saturday 23rd October 2010. We hope to have a photograph taken of all members outside our sponsors premise. There will be free energy supplements available if you wish, the more the better! We would expect everyone to be in their club kit if they have some. There will be free tea and coffee at Wimbleball for members.

To cater for all abilities we will ride to the tea stop and on to Bampton together, those who want to have a harder workout can loop back down the hills and do them again each time if they wish! However we do not want a high pace from the group until we leave Bampton. It is a club ride to support each other, not leave each other behind at the start! However from Bampton it will be every rider for them self back to The Bicycle chain. This should keep everyone happy, and most will find members of a similar level to enjoy the short journey from Bampton to Taunton. The roads chosen are quiet, and the route is about 50 miles. The course is lumpy in places, but please do not be put off. We can all ride an Alpine stage; it is only the speed that makes us suffer! That is why we will support each other on the more undulating part. Back to Taunton is fairly easy apart from Waterow. If this is successful then we will have one each quarter if possible. It will run regardless of the weather, famous last words! The route is as follows and on quiet roads. The Chain to Norton Fitzwarren and out along the B3227 At Wiveliscombe turn right, then second right in to North Street(9 miles) To Langley marsh Maundown(long gradual climb) Washbattle Bridge Tanners Hill (very short steep climb) Left at Huish champflower sign posted Upton (Slight incline for several miles) B3190 crossroads, turning right 2nd on left to Wimbleball Lake(prior to radio masts) Over the lake and first turning on the left to the cafe (free tea and coffee)

Leaving back to the road and left, steep descent(hairpin), up Bryants hill to crossroads Right and up Storridge lane to Brompton regis Through the village and up Lyddons hill Left on to the main road(20 miles), and downhill at last (steep descent, take care) to join the A396 Turning left towards Bampton Following the A396 several miles along the base of the valley Passing the junction with the B3227 at Black cat, and along the A396 Turning left to Bampton at The Exeter inn (roundabout), thus avoiding the steep climbs.(30 miles) Through Bampton and along the B3227, passing Shillingford and on to Waterow (long climb to the top of Wiveliscombe) Then fast descent through Wivey and the 8 miles back to the Bicycle chain.

Tired happy and ready for an afternoon nap!

If you plan to come please email Dan Cox (daniel.cox4@btinternet.com) to have an idea of numbers, 105 we hope!

Kind Regards

The last evening time trial of the season took place on Wednesday and rather ironically the riders enjoyed possibly the warmest evening of the year! It also signified the final round of the clubs 'Handicap Series' which thanks to a personal best By Ivan Clapson saw him pinch 2nd place at the last moment. Series winner was shoolboy novice Jack Plummer who consistantly improved throughout the year to record two mid 22 minutes 10s in his first season. Third place went to Adam Jones who too enjoyed his best season so far. The big loser was Andy Wellings who having been in the top three all season slipped to fourth after the final event. SRC riders were in action last week firstly in the Weston Wheelers Evening TT at Cross where the clubs Adam Jones produced a personal best and first sub 22 minute ride with a 21:55, winning the event in the process! Darren Avery was next best placed SRC rider with a 23:09 ride demonstrating remarkable consistancy. The evening didn't start too favourably with a localised cloudburst before the start. Many decided to give it a miss but those who stayed were greeted with pretty good conditions with the later starters just getting the benefit of an increasing wind on the return leg.

On Sunday the club managed to get two teams of three riders together for the CS Dynamo 4up TTT. The 'A' Team of Andy Winterbottom, Ben Turp and Tim Reeves produced a fine ride on the revised course with 58:46. The 'B' team of Andy Wellings, Ian Hutchings and Steuart Saunders had a stressfull start to their event with Ian going over the handlebars two minutes before the start. Having damaged himself quite badly it was decided to ride it as a two up instead. Their time of 1h 2m 11s was pretty good reward under the circumstances.

SRC News 14th August

The Weston Wheelers Open 10 start was delayed by 30 minutes on Saturday due to frequent downpours and heavy traffic tailing back at the roundabout (both of which had eased a lot by the time riders finally got away). Due in part to the heavy rain before the start, only around 1/3rd riders rode the event. Fastest SRC rider claiming 3rd overall was evergreen Andy Winterbottom in a personal best time of 20m 47s. Tim Reeves produced a 23m 50s ride and Jessica a personal best time of 26m 19s.

SRC News 11th August

It was a particularly windy night that greeted riders for the club's 10 mile championship on Wednesday night. The event attracted the best turnout of the season with 28 riders taking part. Although most riders went slower due to the conditions Mark Ashurst reversed the trend claiming Gold Medal with a time of 22:03. Second and a silver medal was claimed by Adam Jones with a 22:33 ride. Bronze medal went to Dan Cox in 22:54. So the clubs 10 mile champion 2010 is . . . .Mark Ashurst!

It seems Dave Poole has been busy lately, here is a report received from Dave recently. Any budding MTB'ers should make contact with Dave. "Last weekend was a new experience for me, I was the only SRC representative in the Axe valley peddlers seafront crit at Seaton prom. After afew laps I got gapped from the 6 leaders, and settled down with two others to race for 7th 8th and 9th, I won the sprint for 7th place. Week before that was the MTB Southwest Champs at Newnham Plymouth, again I was lucky enough to enjoy a hard fought battle with two others guys at the sharp end of the race this time, quite happy with third place though, Its surprising how self conscious you can feel standing on a podium! And the week before that, my regular team mates and I raced 24hrs at Original Source Mountain Mayhem. We were 4th Vet team but for 23hrs we were 3rd, just losing out to some better tactics by our rivals in the last hour. This was out of a field of 108 teams."

This is Jack's first season and he has got consistantly quicker all season culminating in a 22m 34s ride in the Weston Wheelers 10 on Wednesday Night. Jack knocked a whole minute off his personal best which he put down to a purchase of a new skinsuit! Jack easily leads the Handicap Series. See the link at the top of the page. Well done Jack.

Andy & Steuart's Welsh (Mis)adventure

Andy and Steuart travelled to Wales in an attempt to secure fast times for the BAR competition but came away bitterly disappointed! First mistake was the course selection. Thinking they had entered the super fast 25 mile course they instead found they had entered the slowest of the three courses in the area. Undeterred and thinking anything is an improvement on the S4/25 they went anyway. Problem number two. The weather. It was raining on much of the 'sporting' course with a very strong south westerly resulting in half the field not starting and a vicious side wind in both directions. The result? Steuart 1h 1m 55s and Andy 1h 7m 17s. To rub salt into already sore legs when they got back to Bridgwater it was dry, brighter and just a gentle breeze. Thats time trialling I guess.

It seems the slow weather wasn't confined to just South Wales as Tim Reeves & Sarah Dunn found out on Sunday as they produced times in the region of 1h 2m and 1h 7m respectively down in Dorset.

The road racers weren't immune to the bad weather either. Thursday night probably saw the worst conditions for a circuit race at Ilton period. Driving rain and almost gail force winds were the order of the day. A healthy number of hardy SRC riders turned up looking for easy points, thinking that no one else would turn up. Seems everyone else had the same ideas though. However the more sensible ones packed in fairly quick time leaving a few hardy fools to continue. Best SRC rider was Ben Turp in 5th, Dan Cox claimed 6th closely followed by Keith Nicholls and Ian Hutchings.

SRC News 14th July

Jack Plummer extended his lead in the 10 Mile Evening TT Handicap Series on Wednesday with a ride od 23m 38s. An identical time to last week although conditions this week were far less favourable. It seems that Jack has sewn up first place in the series.

SRC News 11th July

Three club riders travelled to South Wales to ride a 25 mile TT. Darren improved on his previous best time for the course with a 57m 24s ride. Sarah Dunn missed her first sub hour ride by just 5 secs to record a personal best time for the distance. Mark Kurpyta produced a 1h 4m 48s ride.

Fast improving Junior Jack Plummer produced another personal best with a 23m 38s ride. Andy Wellings, Dave Lane and Colin Rutter produced 24m 22s, 24m 40s and 25m 0s respectively.

'Testers' were in action at the Yeovil CC 25 on Sunday. Andy Winterbottom continued his run of top placings with 4th in 55m 42s. Daren Avery and Carl Ward just failed to break the hour with 1h 0m 15s and 1h 0m 20s respectively. The night before Mark Kurpyta rode in Dorset producing a 24m 20s ride for the ten mile time trial.

SRC News 3rd July

Wow what a great nights racing at Ilton on Thursday evening! SRC managed to achieve 7 starters (Steuart Saunders, Dan Cox, Andy Wellings, Mark Deakin, Jack Plummer, Ian Hutchings and Keith Nicholls) in the third category race and controlled the race from the start by either trying to create a move or bringing others back. It was a windy evening so the going was quite tough at times. The aim was to try and get a rider in the top three at the finish. Two riders got away on the penultimate lap so SRC worked hard to bring them back - or so they thought. With so many lapped riders on the circuit it appears that one of the two stayed away so the group were sprinting for second rather than first place! Towards the end of the final lap a Team Certini rider attacked off the front gaining a reasonable gap. Some unselfish riding by Steuart with Dan on his wheel brought the rider back just before the finishing straight giving Dan the perfect leadout to win the bunch sprint for second place as it happens.

SRC News 27th June

Riders were in action again this weekend with Andy Wellings and Steuart Saunders travelling to Holt near Wimborne to ride a 45 mile road race over three laps of a 15 mile circuit with the finish at the top of the fourth ascent up the preem hill. Steuart tried to get away on the final lap several times only to be brought back by a bunch only interested in getting to the finish as a group. Halfway up the finish Steuart was well placed with four others when the dreaded cramp set in and finished outside the points closely followed by Andy.

Darren Avery and Mark Kurpyta travelled to Wiltshire to ride a 10 mile TT on the U47 course. Darren produced a 23:01 and Mark 25:19.Darren is still chasing that ellusive sub 23 minute 10! The next day Mark was in action again this time on the U48 and produced a season best 23:46.

SRC News 19th June

A five man team has just completed day one of the Kalas Two Day Stage Race with some of the countries top Elite riders. In fact Team SRC are five of only six 3rd category riders in the field of 80. Stage One was a prologue time trial over one circuit of the Ilton Airfield. Ben Turp produced a super ride to finish 22 with Dan, Ian and Steuart finishing further down the field and split by just 7 secs. Andy Welling also finished the stage. Stage Two was a circuit race of one hour plus one lap. By now the wind had increased quite considerably making the going even tougher. Unfortunately Ben crashed out on the last lap bringing 3 riders down with him. Ben has some cuts and bruises and went off to A&E for an x ray after the event. Top placed finisher was Steuart Saunders who finished ahead of Andy Wellings, Dan Cox and Ian Hutchings who became detached from the group on the penultimate lap. With speeds way in excess of 30 mph plenty of riders were on the rivet with many packing. This left just a team of 4 for the TTT. On paper SRC were the weakest team in the event and as such expectations were not too high. With three riders needing to finish Steuart, Dan and Andy kept it together once Ian had been distanced. Standings after day one were Steuart 53rd place, Andy a further 3 mins down on 62nd, Dan another 5 mins down in 71st with Ian paying the price for being dropped in the TTT a couple of places further down. The four only have a few hours to recover in time for the 'Queen' stage on Sunday which constists a 75 mile lumpy RR around Somerton and Compton Dundon. A reduced field of approx. 50 riders took the start of the RR stage and all SRC riders suffering from the ill effects of the previous day. Steuart and keith (Nicholls) completed 3 laps, Dan punctured on the first lap and Andy completed one lap. Ian crashed out on lap four. Day 2 was always going to be a challenge but particularly so after such a tough first day. Remember out team of thirds cats were probably giving away a decade or two to most of the other riders who were predominantly elite/1st cats. Well done lads.

Andy Winterbottom improved his overall time on the BAR competition with a 54:44 ride at the weekend. Carl Ward produced a consistant ride with a 59:08 ride just 2 secs slower than the previous week. Andy now heads the BAR table with an average speed just over 28mph!

Andy Winterbottom

SRC News 13th June

'Testers' were in 25 mile action on Sunday morning in particularly good conditions on the A303. Andy Winterbottom continued his fine run of placings with 2nd place in the event with 55m 35s. Carl Ward achieved 9th place with 59. 06s and Tim Reeves produced a fine 59m 41s ride to help SRC win the 'Team' prize. Well done lads. Four SRC riders were in action nearby in the Yeovil CC John Andrews Memorial RR over 65 miles of a fast but rolling course based around Langport. Alec Leslie and Andy Wellings failed to finish after completing four or five of the 12 laps. Steuart Saunders was going well untill a bad case of leg cramps on lap 9 or 10 ended his race. Ian Hutchings rode a fine race finishing in the bunch.

Next weekend the clubs 'roadies' will be in action again this time in the Kalas Two Day Stage Race. The 5 man team will comprise; Steuart Saunders, Ian Hutchings, Dan Cox, Andy Wellings and Ben Turp. Stage One is an individual TT, followed by a Circuit Race and then a TTT. Day Two is an 80 mile RR based around Somerton & Street. With some of the countries top riders down to ride it is going to be a hard day or two at the office!

SRC News 5th June

On a windy Saturday night the Somerset Road Club (SRC) ran the second of its two 10 mile TT at Cross. There was a strong headwind out which made the going pretty tough. SRC's Sarah Dunn won the ladies prize. SRC missed out on the team prize by just 14secs. Eleven SRC riders took part and their times are listed below.

SRC News 2nd June

Ian Hutchings & Ben Turp scored the clubs first mass start victories of the 2010 season on Thursday evening. Ian attacked at the end of the penultimate lap in the 3rd Cat. race and managed to stay away for the rest of the race as the bunch took their foot off the gas. Ian was helped by the disrupting tactics of his team mates who did their best to slow down any chaces. Ben won the 4th Cat. race in only his 2nd ever circuit race! A great night for the club!

Three SRC riders participated in the Alltrax 10 on the S4 course on a stormy Saturday evening. Conditions were far from ideal with a strong diagonal cross wind making the going tough for all but the strong men. Which makes Darren Avery's personal best ride of 23:08 all the more remarkable! Steuart Saunders suffered a bad evening "leaving his legs at home" to produce a 23:58 ride. Andy Wellings produced a mid 24 minute ride. All three times will improve their average speed in the clubs BAR competition though. The event was won by John Wynn in 20:38. I said the weather doesn't seem to affect the strong men!

Seven members of Somerset Road Club/Bicycle Chain/Notaro Windows travelled to Usk in South Wales to participate in the Pontypool RCC 25 Mile Open Time Trial event on Sunday. Riders were greeted with super weather conditions and some fast times were on the cards. Andy Winterbottom was the fastest SRC rider producing a personal best time of 52m 11s to claim 3rd place overall. Second fastest SRC rider was Tim Reeves with 57m 04s, followed up by Steuart Saunders who produced a personal best time of 58m 38s just ahead of Darren Avery with 58m 54s also a personal best. The clubs top lady rider, suffering two unshipped chains still managed to produce a time of 1h 1m 57s, just missing out on the ladies prize in the process. Andrew Wellings also produced a personal best time of 1h 2m 54s followed up by Mark Kurpyta with 1h 3m 59s. With all these times counting for the clubs 'Best All Rounder' Competition it will be interesting to see what the impact will be. With most of these riders down to ride a 10 mile time trial in Devon on Saturday the pace is definately hotting up!

Dean Robson added another win to his palmaris by winning the VTTA 10 at the weekend in 20:08.

Other SRC finishers were Mark Deakin and Ian Hutchings. In fact the 3rd cats were holding the gap to the Elite race for the first 3 laps or so. On a cold, wet and windy morning SRC evergreen Andy Winterbottom claimed second place in the Clevedon & District RC 25 mile TT on Sunday. Andy was also the fastest 'veteran' (rider over the age of 40) - sorry Andy. Carl Ward finished in a fine 10th place with a time of 1h 5m 36s.
