Time Trial

Time Trialling
Time trialling is the purest form of road racing. Whilst it is possible to race over any distance most races are organised along fairly regular lines over 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles, although there are 12 & 24 hour events as well! Riders ride on an 'out and back' course which means for example that in a 10 mile TT a rider would ride 5 miles to the turn and retrace the miles back to the start. Riders are sent off alone at one minute intervals and are racing against the clock in an attempt to improve on their 'personal best' for the distance. Below are details of our local 'club' evening time trials which are an ideal place to start if you are new to racing.

Somerset Road Club Best All-Rounder (BAR) Competition. Details can be found here: - BAR 2011 (Adobe Acrobat Req'd)

The Wednesday evening Time Trial events timetable can be found here: - 2010 Club TT Timetable.

To add some extra spice the the evening time trials we are running them as a 'handicap series' with riders requiring 5 counting times to qualify. Riders handicaps were set by their fastest time the previous year as set against the fastest rider last year. The rider with the fastest average speed against their handicap will be the series winner. There are some prizes for the top three. 1st = Long sleeve club jersey. 2nd = Pair of armwarmers and mitts. 3rd Club overshoes. The handicap table for 2011 can be found here.2011 Club TT Handicap Series

Again we will be jointly hosting with Weston Wheelers the Wednesday evening club time trial series. The 10 course will be the U21/10 (Cross-East Brent & return). The 19 course is the 'sporting' circuit (Cross-East Brent-Mark-Wedmore-Cheddar- Axbridge). As you can see there is a mix of events which hopefully will suit everyone.

This is a series of 22 events held on Wednesday evenings, starting at 18:45 with last sign on at 18:20. The series consists of a 10mile tt based on the UC21/10 course, slightly modified with a start on the A38 immediately adjacent to the Cross/Axbridge crossroads. This type of club event is a good introduction to racing as well as an ideal way to train for "open" events. This is also on a fast course improved for 2007 by significant recent resurfacing. While not a dual carriageway "drag strip" it will be the course to try for those keen on a PB. Prospective members as well as members of other established cycle clubs are made welcome. If you are new to cycle racing temporary membership can be arranged on the day. For the 2011 season we will be sharing the evening events with Weston Wheelers. On alternate weeks each club will host a club TT. To be able to ride you will have to be a member of a cycling club that is affiliated to CTT otherwise you will need to be a 2nd claim member of a cycling club that is CTT affiliated. Both clubs will allow just one ride before you have to join a CTT affiliated club. Entry fee is now £2.00 per person per event.

Each month the series is varied by a club sporting 19 on U253* and an annual club 25* on the UC252. And finally Burrington Combe Hill Climb UH26. * At time keepers discretion 10 mile course can be ridden providing 10 mile riders start first (sign on promptly please).

Parking and "sign on" for all but the last event is in the lay-by/picnic area on the right traveling east from the A38 on the A371 towards Cheddar above Axbridge. All are welcome.

The club strongly recommends the use of a hard shell helmet. Riders under 18 years of age MUST wear a hard shell helmet to comply with CTT rules - NO HELMET NO RIDE
All riders recognise that cycling is a potentially dangerous pastime and shall not hold the Somerset Road Club, it’s officers or officials responsible for any loss or injury incurred whilst participating in the club TT's.

All members will be entered on to a rota to help with the organising of the evening events, this could be for time keeping / pushing off.
